Chapter 20

“The Devil’s Ball will kick the hotel opening off with a bang!” Aunt Fanny went on, holding the room captive with her every word. “We’ll each play a role in the show. Maureen, you’ll ensure the kitchen runs smoothly. William, you’ll check-in our guests, and Collin, you’ll be our bellboy and escort them up to their suites. Clair, we’ll have you work the gift shop. And I, of course, will play hostess and mingle with our guests. Prior to dinner, we’ll have actors perform a dramatic reenactment of ‘the Monster of Chateau Du Coeur’, absolutely titillating our visitors for the thrilling sort of hide-and-seek we have planned with the monster.” She consulted her family, each of them perplexed and overwhelmed. “What do you say?”

“It all sounds very exciting.” Maureen then turned to her husband. “William, what do you think?”

The look on his face suggested he was in the middle of an internal debate with himself, but ultimately caved. “Let’s do it.”

Maureen overjoyed, “I’ll get something started in the kitchen. The three of us can finalize the details over breakfast.”

“Lovely.” Aunt Fanny then pointed a finger over at her luggage. “Oh, and William, my luggage isn’t nailed to the floor. Do be a gentleman and deliver them up to my room. Try not to dawdle. We have a lot of planning to do and not a whole lot of time to do so.”

He gritted his teeth, “Yes, Fanny.”

Collin took an opportunity to make his way to the door. He spun back around, facing the fireplace. “If anyone should need me, I’ll be upstairs in my bedroom.” He pointed up at the ceiling. “All alone. In my bedroom. Should anyone want to join me.”

William’s forehead wrinkled from lifting brows. “Thank you for announcing it to the entire room.”

Collin projected his voice, “I’m just saying, that’s where I’ll be.”

He then slipped out of the sitting room, convincing me he wished for me to follow him. Once he had exited, Aunt Fanny glanced over at William and Maureen.

“He’s a little odd, isn’t he?”

“Of course he is,” Maureen agreed. “He’s a teenager.”

I jumped off the stool and crossed my side of the sitting room, making way to the Persian rug. I rolled it back, opened the trapdoor, and then made my way through the gloomy labyrinth of secret passages until I returned to the crawlspace hidden behind Collin’s bedroom. This route must have been much faster than the one Collin had chosen. I arrived there before him in half the time. He arrived soon after, seemingly exhausted following his climb up the main staircase. He closed the door, locked it shut, and then scoured the room in search for me.

“Collin,” I caught his attention.

“Adam?” He spun around like a dog chasing after its own tail. “Where are you?”

“I’m over here.”

He turned around again, squinting ahead, and found my eye subtly peeking through the rip in the wall. “That’s not creepy at all.” He went over to the thin wall that separated us. “How did
